Wanton Slumber
Wanton Slumber
The clock read 5:55am, the sun was rising, the grass latent with dew and soft droplets of morning mist, I sat there atop the grassy knoll. The ground beneath me rumbled like a giant green belly, I was curious about something, and thinking to myself
"What the ever loving funk is going on right now."
I looked around, peering to the left, the right, and then grounding in the center with my sight focused on the alarm clock that sat in front of me. It was plugged into the ground, into the grass, and now read 6:00am. I pinched myself, it definitely hurt, but where the funk did this freaking alarm clock plug into. I was sitting with my legs crossed and my back hunched over, I closed my eyes and shook my head back and forth, trying to shake the feeling of ominous absurdity. I must be lost, where am I?
"Ayo, Fern, cm'ere" said a voice from behind me.
I turned to meet the voices origin, but saw nothing, just more of the same grassy knoll. I turned back to the alarm clock on the ground, it read 6:66am, and i thought to myself, Jesus Christ, okay, I am definitely dreaming. I crawled forward over my knees, reaching out to the clocks plug. Ripping it out of the ground, its prongs were made of wood, and its cord turned from black plastic to green tubey goop in my hand, it felt umbilical. I looked into the small hole from where the cord was just plugged in, it looked like a small outlet made out of sullen wood and rock. I put the cords prongs on my tongue, they tasted of something grimy and metallic, and I felt a bolt of electricity shoot down my throat. My tongue tingled, I pulled the prongs back, but it still felt like sparks jumped the prongs gap between my hand and mouth into my gullet. I took a big gulp and swallowed. My stomach was now alive with an electric feel. I looked at the unplugged alarm clock, it read 5:56am,
"what the funk" i thought to myself.
"Ayo, Fern, cm'ere" rang out a voice from behind me again.
Alive and amplified, i spun around violently to figure out the source of the voice, and this time I saw it.
An alarm clock with eight legs, small dinosaur arms, and two 00s for eyes was standing there; its 00s staring into my eyes. The time read 6:00, the clock took a knee and said,
"RING WAKE UP RING WAKE UP RING WAKE UP"
I woke up, I was on a leather couch in a nice cozy little room. My phones alarm was buzzing annoyingly at my side.
"That was funny," I thought to myself, I could feel sparks jumping around in my stomach like they did while i was asleep. My phone read 6:01am. I swiped snooze and closed my eyes, falling backwards into another wanton slumber.
